Florida rejects AP African American studies course

An Advanced Placement (AP) course centered around African American studies will not be offered in Florida high schools…

“The new class is not historically accurate”

Florida high school students will not have the opportunity to take a new Advanced Placement (AP) African American studies course. The Florida Department of Education said the new class “significantly lacks education value,” “is inexplicably contrary to Florida law,” and is not “historically accurate.”

The Florida Department of Education didn’t specify which curriculum topics it objected to, nor did it state which particular state law the AP course allegedly violated. But the move comes after the Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed into law the “Stop WOKE Act,” which restricts teachings of racism and certain historical events as well as lessons that could make people feel guilty for things done by people of their same race.

According to the College Board, who is in charge of administering AP exams, the course will cover history, civil rights, politics, literature, arts, and geography. The College Board hopes to make the class available to other schools across the country at the start of the 2024-2025 school year.
