What is Transcendental Meditation?

Transcendental meditation, created in 1958 in India, was popularized by Paul McCartney in the late 1960s. The practice has been found to be effective in particular for struggling students, veterans, and survivors of domestic abuse. Various medical sources report that the practice lowers blood pressure, protects patients from heart disease, and reduces stress and burnout. The practice of repeating a mantra to achieve twenty minutes of peace twice a day is popular, with over 6 million participants including Western celebrities.

“Transcendental Meditation is a simple, effortless, ancient form of meditation that can allow any human being to dive within, experience the deepest level of life, infuse that all positive qualities, and grow in that and see negativity start to lift away. It is a beautiful, beautiful thing for the human being. Its goal is to teach — give transcendental meditation to any student anywhere in the world who wants it. Then alongside with that, give it to any school that wants it for the whole school and to establish peace-creating groups,” filmmaker David Lynch shares with Brut.

From TV to TM

David Lynch, famous for hit TV-show Twin Peaks (1990-91) and cult-classic Blue Velvet (1986), believes in transcendental meditation so deeply that he co-created a foundation in Iowa to teach the practice in 2005. While the average course in the meditation costs around $1,000, the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace provides the classes for free to the homeless, veterans, war refugees, and prison inmates. As of 2020, the foundation has provided scholarships for these meditation classes to over 70 thousand students in over 350 African and United States schools. The foundation has also created Perinatal Mental Health Research Award to fund research on the effects of transcendental meditation on anxiety.
