Practicing self-care during the coronavirus pandemic

Now, more than ever, is the perfect time to work on self-care and improve your mental and physical well-being. Here are some tips on how to practice self-care from Emma Kenny, a psychologist.

Practice some bonding activities

Having a range of activities at hand is key. Make a plan of what you and the people you are quarantining with will do for the day. One good example of a bonding activity would be completing a puzzle together. You could also have coloring activities planned, but another important thing to keep in mind is to make sure that you are carrying the load with each other when it comes down to domestic duties, like cooking for example. Activities like these release lots of positive chemicals from the brain and increase intimacy.

Exercise

If you are inside for a long period of time, exercise will help you a lot. For example, when you are stressed, adrenaline and cortisol starts to build up and makes you feel bad. Exercising will help you relieve yourself of all those anxious feelings and stress. There will also be serotonin released in your brain which will continue to increase your positive feelings. Overall, exercising is one way you can use your time effectively.

Get some fresh air

Even if you don’t have access to a garden, the simple act of opening your windows can do a lot for your well-being. Getting some fresh air can improve your well-being more than you might realize at first.

Keep your habits

For some people, staying in their pajamas and watching TV will help their mental health because they feel like they are able to genuinely disconnect and relax. But for others, it can be really helpful to try and keep your routines, like putting on your makeup every morning for example. Humans like their habits, and habits can actually make us feel more healthy.

Connect to online therapies

One of the best things about the connected generation is that there are so many things available for people for free. Connecting and reaching out will be really helpful for people’s mental health.
