    Ah not all Wombats are protected and farmers can apply for a permit to kill them. East of the Hume Hwy Common Wombats are unprotected. https://awpc.org.au/the-animals/wombats/

    Unfortunately, despite better laws to protect wombats now, they are still in decline and the future is looking bleak. Farmers can still apply for permits to kill them (simply as 'pests' not for food or fur) and on top of ongoing hunting, sarcoptic mange is decimating numbers. Entire populations can be wiped out in a single year my mange outbreaks which are highly contagious and spell a long slow death where the animals itch to death as their fur falls out and the skin gets callused, eventually leading to blindness and starvation. Government refuses to recognise the problem as these iconic animals just crash in numbers.
