5 foods we will be eating on Mars

The possibility of relocating to Mars might be closer than we think. Here are five foods that will be available on the red planet.

Living on Mars?

Mars, one of the closest planets to Earth, has always captured the attention of any and all interested in space. While the possibility of life and water is possible but not certain on this red planet, movies like The Martian (2013) and Stranded (2001) have got everyone thinking about what life would really be like if humans lived on the planet. While several countries have commenced robotic trips to Mars, the first rovers to land on Mars and successfully transmit data were the U.S.’s Viking 1 and Viking 2 in 1975.

“I can give you my personal impression which is that a mission to Mars in the close future is realistic. I think the technological and psychological obstacles can be overcome,” French HI-SEAS crew member Cyprien Verseux informs Agence France-Presse news outlet.

Since it is 140 million miles from Earth, fresh supplies would only be available to any humans who live there every few years. There are many elements to consider when packing food for the long space journey: longevity, nutritional content, variety of dishes, genetic modifications, lack of crumbs/spillage, and whether or not it would need to be rationed. The top five foods suggested may surprise you as they differ from the foods NASA provides astronauts headed for the moon which include but are not limited to: soups, puddings, chicken, cereals, eggs, and applesauce.

What’s on the menu?

In 2016, members of the HI-SEAS team on a year-long isolation trip on Hawaii in preparation for a hypothetical trip to Mars used pre-cooked meat to create several dishes over the course of the year. Like Matt Damon's garden in The Martian (2013), certain plants and vegetables would actually be able to grow in Martian soil. A certain dessert spread was so highly prized by test subjects that it would have to be rationed in any space exhibition.
