New Yorker Nicholas Peart was subjected to a stop-and-frisk by New York police at least 5 times between 2006 and 2011. Since 2002, around 5 million New Yorkers were subjected to stop-and-frisk.
Nearly 9 out of 10 New Yorkers who were subjected to stop-and-frisk were completely innocent
Peart tells Brut, “I've been stopped for simply from coming from the gym and on my way from the gym all the way to my actual apartment. I've been stopped on my way from school and stopped just for simply just going to the store. I'm usually coming or going from point A to point B, and I'm just there's a period where I would just stop very, very frequently. And the reality of these stops is that is very aggressive, it's very invasive, and it's a violation of privacy… when I was stopped, I knew that it was like the wrong thing. I didn't accept that as just a fact of life. While I had other family members or friends who had been stopped and frisked and who said you need to get used to it? I was like, no, I didn't. I didn't accept this as just something that, you know, has to happen because of my skin color, you know? So, I always felt the need to speak out.… as I was getting older, this is not something that I would accept for my kids or for my younger brothers as well.” In 2011, stop-and-frisk peaked in New York, with nearly 700,000 stops recorded by the NYPD.
During Michael Bloomberg’s time as mayor, the number of stops in New York City peaked
In 2013, Peart joined a class action lawsuit that successfully sued the city over its stop-and-frisk policy. The number of recorded stops has dropped dramatically from its peak in 2011 at around 685,000 to about 11,000 in 2018. 87% of individuals stopped in 2011 were black or Latino. 93% of the stops resulted in no weapons being found. “The lasting effects of stop and frisk? There's a number of different things. You know, you have people who have had my experiences and people who have had much worse experiences. There have been people who died, because of stop and frisk. People, there are people who have arrest records for stop and frisk.”, Peart concludes.
