A democratic socialist

Bernie Sanders was born in 1941 in Brooklyn, NY, to Jewish immigrants from Poland and Russia


"My father came to this country at the age of 17 from Poland. He came to this country fleeing anti-Semitism and fleeing violence and fleeing terrible, terrible poverty. And he came here, and he never made a lot of money, but he was able to live a quality of life and raise his kids in a way that he never could have done from where he came."


His interest in politics


He said he became interested in politics at a young age after losing multiple relatives in the Holocaust. In 1958, he finished in third place in a race for student body president. By 21, both his parents had died. In 1963, he attended the March on Washington. At 22, he was arrested protesting against school segregation. In 1964, he received a degree in political science from the University of Chicago.


Career as a politician


In 1981, after winning by just 10 votes, he became the mayor of Burlington, Vermont — running as a democratic socialist. At 49, he became the first independent to be elected to Congress in 40 years. In 2007, he became a senator. In 2016, during the presidential campaign, he emphasizes his socialist views while facing Hillary Clinton. Since the election, he has repeatedly gone after Trump and his politics; Although, Trump hasn’t been his only target. On February 19, 2019, he started his second presidential campaign. In this campaign, Sanders’ principal policies are the Green New Deal, Medicare for all and reducing inequality for Americans.
