Of course the ultimate value given by this film to the giant sequoia is, “the volume of wood it produces,” which would be silly as it would then be dead. Why value the corpse more than the living tree? How about valuing the oxygen produced throughout its lifetime? How about valuing its importance to ecosystems? Oh well. Of course, yes, I understand: many humans believe that the only value of any external thing is in its usefulness to him/herself. The narcissism of our species. But why is killing the go-to solution for some? Why find the greatest value in the dead flesh of an ancient wild tree? I say its value is in its old soul, witness to the dawning of humanity. We could sit with that. Embrace it. Cohabitate.
