    Solid vegetable fat is hydrogenated (trans fat), which is completely unnatural and neither birds or humans should be consuming it. A better option would be pork lard, perhaps. I believe they use something like that for suet (fat and seed blocks made for wild birds) that you can buy at a pet store.

    In Estonia fatballs for winterbirds are sold in most of stores that are selling food for pets. Just these balls are made with animal fat and with no raisins. We have long and cold winters usually, so many people do feed wild birds. Mostly with sunflower seeds but also with fatballs and lard.
