The okapi was one of the last large mammals discovered

It may look like both a giraffe and a zebra, have white-and-black striped legs and weigh over 200 kg, but this strange-looking creature remained undetected for a very long time. Meet the okapi.

When my daughters were 6 and 7 we went to the Dallas Zoo and were able to witness the birth of an okapi. It opened up a lot of discussion and was something they have never forgotten.

It wasn't undetected. The people of the area had recognized the existence of okapi for a long time. Westerners assumed the locals were talking about mythological creatures and hokum because no European had encountered one yet. Just saying.
