Trump vs. the coronavirus taskforce

In contrast to President Trump’s assurances, public health experts have had some sobering words about how the U.S. will be affected by the coronavirus outbreak.

Trump contradicts Coronavirus Taskforce

What is the Coronavirus Taskforce?

The coronavirus taskforce was formed in January by President Donald Trump to advise the public and office on courses of action. These members include Vice President Mike Pence as the point person to the president, coronavirus response coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx, Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar II, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Dr. Robert Redfield, Head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, Immigration official Kenneth Cuccinelli II, Vice Admiral of the U.S. Public Health Service Dr. Jerome Adams, and Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Seema Verma.

“We have always said, from the first moment that we have spoken about this, that we would see more cases. We are seeing more cases. We will see more cases,” Alex Azar announced at a White House press conference, directly conflicting with President Trump’s assertion that the warmer spring weather will cause the disease to “die out.” As of March 4, there have been 160 cases in the United States in 17 states with 11 deaths.

How to prevent the virus

Since the coronavirus taskforce predicts that a coronavirus vaccine will not be perfected for another year or year and a half, it is best to start looking into at-home prevention methods. Health professionals are asking citizens to stop buying medical masks as they are often worn improperly, and tend to be more effective for those with the virus rather than those trying to avoid getting sick. Also, the mass stockpiling of these devices are preventing medical workers from having the proper supplies. Other known prevention methods include rigorously and frequently washing hands, using hand sanitizer if soap is unavailable, disinfecting any and all surfaces, and preparing medicine and food supplies in case of infection.
