In a statement put out by his office, the Senator decided to check himself into a hospital and opened up about his ongoing depression, saying the feelings had become more severe in recent weeks. Several fellow Democrats, including President Joe Biden, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN), took to Twitter to praise Fetterman for his decision.
As did Republican Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who tweeted that he and his wife would be praying for the Senator and that "mental illness is real and serious.” Fetterman is receiving care at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland. It is unclear how long he will stay.
