U.S. Teen girls are sadder and experience more violence

A CDC official said teenage girls “are in crisis” after a new report showed they are feeling sadder and experiencing more violence than they have in the past … So, what exactly prompted this concern?

High levels of sadness and sexual violence

According to a new CDC report, teen girls today are feeling sadder and experiencing more violence than they have in the past. In 2021, 57% of teenage girls said they felt “persistently sad or hopeless,” which is the highest rate in a decade. In 2011, 36% of girls were “persistently sad or hopeless,” per the CDC.

The CDC also found that 14% of teenage girls said they had been forced to have sex in their lifetime, with American Indian and Alaska Native girls experiencing sexual violence at the highest rate among racial and ethnic groups. This CDC report is conducted every two years. This year, they received over 17,000 responses from across the nation.
