02/05/2021 12:01A great example of what one strong person with purpose, convictions, pride and sense of social justice and community. I remember her, met her; and, years later, interviewed her on the TV show ( HARAMBEE) I directed-produced for Alabama Public Television. I remember attending the Bus Boycott meeting at my church (Holt Street Baptist) when I was eight years old when my cousin (E.D. Nixon, president of the Ala NAACP) I was told, not only nominated Dr. King to lead the MIAâs bus boycott. But, Nixon , also, got Parks out of jail after she called him. My older sister, Verdell, remembered going to Mrs. Parksâ meetings as part of the NAACP youth group (for which she served as counselor). Mrs. Parks (in the Cleveland Court projects) , like Nixon (on Clinton Street) , lived in walking distant from our house (on Central St.) So was the church. How well do I remember!!! Even the night my grandfather stood guarding the church because of threats. Those REALLY âwere the daysâ!
