President Donald Trump said the U.S. “can’t take care of daycare” in part because “we’re fighting wars,” during a White House Easter luncheon with religious leaders and Cabinet members. In remarks later removed from the White House’s YouTube page, Trump suggested the federal government should prioritize defense spending over health care and child care, leaving those responsibilities to states. At one point, he framed it as a choice between funding war and funding day care.
