The Trump administration’s Department of Education reclassified nursing degrees as non-professional degrees.

The new federal rules under the Big Beautiful Bill are being set to remove nursing from the list of “professional degrees,” cutting graduate nursing students among other medical students, off from higher borrowing limits and the former Grad PLUS program. Education officials say the definition follows historical precedent, while nursing leaders warn the change will restrict access to essential training and threaten the workforce.
