A jail is meant to be a place where rules are strictly enforced. But what happens when a person entrusted with upholding those rules faces allegations of misusing their authority?
In Rajasthan’s Ajmer, a case involving a jail official has raised questions about prison discipline and accountability. Jailer Divya Chaudhary was arrested in Kota on 6 October 2026, following allegations linked to two female inmates at Ajmer Central Jail.
The incident reportedly dates back to July, but the case came to wider attention after concerns were raised within the prison system. What exactly happened, why is the jailer facing police action, and what does the case reveal about safeguards for people in custody?
What Happened Inside Ajmer Central Jail?
According to police, Chaudhary took two female inmates, identified as Kiran and Sana, out of Ajmer Central Jail in a private vehicle on 12 July .
The alleged removal took place without court permission and without the required entry in the jail records. The women were reportedly taken to Chaudhary's rented flat in ARG City, Ajmer, where they were made to clean the house and help with domestic responsibilities.
The Indian Express reported that the two women remained outside the prison for around an hour or two before returning. The incident allegedly unfolded despite objections from prison personnel posted at the main gate.
Police also alleged that Chaudhary and a woman jail guard, Sonia Chaudhary, intimidated staff who questioned their actions.
The inmates were subsequently brought back to the jail, and a report was sent to senior officials.
Who Is Divya Chaudhary, And Why Did She Allegedly Do It?
Divya Chaudhary, 37, was serving as a jailer at Ajmer Central Jail and was responsible for duties connected to the custody, security and discipline of prisoners.
According to The Indian Express, she lived in rented accommodation in Ajmer, around eight kilometres from the prison. Her husband, who also works in the prison system, was posted in Kota. The report said she was living separately from him and had two young daughters.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Shivam Joshi told the newspaper that Chaudhary wanted help looking after her daughters and cleaning her home.
The Indian Express also reported Chaudhary's version of events. She claimed that she had asked her subordinate to arrange women from an open jail, whose inmates can leave the facility under applicable arrangements, but that the subordinate brought the two women instead.
Police are investigating the allegations, and Chaudhary is entitled to defend herself through the legal process.
However, personal or household difficulties do not, by themselves, authorise a prison official to take inmates outside the facility without following the applicable rules.
What Is The Legal Action Against Her?
The case was registered at Ajmer's Civil Lines police station on 5 August, following an internal inquiry and a report from a prison guard.
Chaudhary and Sonia Chaudhary were suspended in connection with the incident. Following the registration of the case, Divya allegedly remained away from authorities.
A special police team, with assistance from the cyber cell, traced her using technical evidence and mobile-location information. She was arrested from a residential flat in Kota on October 6 and produced before a court, which sent her to judicial custody.
As reported on October 9, police were still searching for Sonia Chaudhary, who remained absconding.
The arrest does not amount to a conviction. The allegations will have to be examined through the legal process.
Why Does This Case Raise Bigger Questions?
A jailer is entrusted with the custody and security of people who cannot freely leave prison. That authority comes with clear responsibilities, including following procedures for any authorised movement of inmates.
If the allegations are established, taking prisoners out for private domestic work would represent a serious misuse of that authority. It would also raise questions about whether staff objections were adequately addressed and whether the prison's internal checks worked as intended.
The incident also highlights the vulnerability of people in custody. Prisoners remain entitled to lawful treatment, even when they are serving sentences or facing criminal proceedings. Their custodial status should not make them available for an official's personal needs.
The investigation must establish precisely what happened, who was involved and whether established safeguards were bypassed.
For now, the central question goes beyond one jailer's alleged actions: how can prison authorities ensure that those entrusted with enforcing the rules are also held accountable when they are accused of violating them?
