For Indian viewers, The Traitors has become a major reality TV talking point. Since its Indian debut in June 2025, the show has generated fan theories, social media discussions and speculation over who can be trusted. Now, with Season 2 streaming from 13 August 2026, the Karan Johar-hosted show is back in the spotlight.
But the idea behind The Traitors did not begin in a palace in Rajasthan.
Its story goes back to the Netherlands, a 17th-century shipwreck and a television format built around one simple question: Who can you trust?
The History Behind The Traitors
The story behind The Traitors begins with the Batavia, a Dutch East India Company ship that was wrecked off Western Australia in 1629.
The survivors were stranded on islands in the Houtman Abrolhos archipelago, where a violent struggle involving mutiny, murder and betrayal unfolded.
That disturbing chapter of Dutch maritime history later became the starting point for a television concept developed by Marc Pos and Jasper Hoogendoorn.
Hoogendoorn has said the Batavia story inspired the original idea, which was initially called The Mutineers. The concept was designed around a group of contestants caught up in a game of betrayal and elimination, drawing on the dramatic events surrounding the historical mutiny.
The original version was planned around a ship, but the production proved too expensive. The concept eventually evolved, with the action moving to a castle while the historical themes of mutiny, betrayal and suspicion remained at the heart of the format.
Pos and Hoogendoorn developed the concept into De Verraders, the Dutch format behind The Traitors. It premiered on RTL 4 on 13 March 2021.
The game divides contestants into two groups: secret Traitors and Faithfuls. The Traitors secretly eliminate players, while the Faithfuls try to identify and remove the Traitors before they can reach the end of the game.
The format uses the kind of social-deduction mechanics familiar from games such as Werewolf and Mafia, but the show's developers have distinguished De Verraders from those games and traced their own concept back to the Batavia story.
The format soon travelled beyond the Netherlands. The UK adaptation premiered on 29 November 2022, hosted by Claudia Winkleman, helping turn The Traitors into an international reality TV franchise.
The Traitors In India
India got its own version several years after the Dutch format began. The Indian adaptation premiered on 12 June 2025 on Prime Video, with Karan Johar as host and 20 celebrity contestants.
The series was produced by BBC Studios India Productions in collaboration with All3Media International.
By the time the Indian version launched, The Traitors had already expanded into multiple international markets. The format's central premise — a group trying to identify secret Traitors within its own ranks — gave Prime Video a ready-made reality format that could be adapted for an Indian audience.
The first season quickly led to a second. Prime Video renewed the series just 13 days after its 12 June 2025 premiere. At the time, Prime Video and All3Media said the show had been watched by viewers across 88% of India's pin codes and that the format had produced more than 35 local versions across more than 30 countries.
Season 2 premiered on 13 August 2026, with Karan Johar returning as host.
From a Dutch TV concept inspired by a 17th-century shipwreck to an Indian reality show filmed against the backdrop of a Rajasthan palace, the setting has changed. But the central question remains the same:
