A 35-year-old man was assaulted by four men in south Delhi’s Saket area after he intervened to stop the alleged harassment of a woman, police said on Wednesday.
The incident took place around 4 am when a 27-year-old woman, employed in the private sector, stepped out of her residence for her morning shift and was waiting for a cab. According to police sources, four men riding on two scooters approached her and began harassing her. The men were allegedly under the influence of alcohol.
Seeing the woman in distress, a man present at the spot objected to their behaviour. Police said the men then turned violent and assaulted him on the road.
The victim, identified as Mukesh, a resident of Sangam Vihar, was allegedly punched, kicked and beaten on his face, chest and abdomen. He was also attacked with bricks during the assault. A video of the incident later surfaced online and has since circulated widely.
Police said Mukesh sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital. He was later referred to the AIIMS Trauma Centre for advanced treatment and was subsequently discharged.
Based on the viral video and the statement of the woman, police registered a First Information Report at the Mehrauli police station.
A senior police officer said that a team analysed CCTV footage from the surrounding area and conducted local verification, which helped identify the suspects.
Four men have been arrested in the case. They have been identified as Vishal Rawat, 26, Jatin, 20, Sonu, 25, and Vivek, 20.
Police said further investigation is underway.
