A government hospital in Madhya Pradesh is facing scrutiny after a 25-year-old woman and her newborn died in Rewa, followed by a viral video showing the hospital superintendent making a remark that sparked outrage.

Dr. Rahul Mishra has now been removed as superintendent of Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, with Dr. Priyank Sharma taking charge. The government order dated 1 September does not give a reason for the change.

The move comes as an inquiry continues into the death of Kalpana Mishra and her newborn, while her family continues to allege that she did not receive adequate medical care.

What Did The Rewa Doctor Say?

A video showing Dr. Rahul Mishra speaking to Kalpana's family circulated widely after her death.

In the purported footage, Dr. Mishra is heard telling a family member: “You got your 22-year-old sister pregnant.” The exchange took place as the family questioned the hospital over Kalpana's treatment and death.

The remark triggered criticism, with Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari also targeting the state government over the episode.

Dr. Mishra later apologised and denied that he had intended the remark in the way it was understood. He also rejected allegations of medical negligence.

Who Was Kalpana Mishra?

Kalpana Mishra, 25, was from Hatwa in Rewa district. She was admitted to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital on the night of 25 August.

She underwent a caesarean section on 26 August. Her condition later deteriorated and she died while receiving treatment. Her newborn also died.

Her family has questioned the treatment she received at the hospital and alleged that their requests for medical attention were not adequately addressed.

Those allegations remain part of the ongoing inquiry.

What Did The Video Before Her Death Show?

A separate video purportedly recorded hours before Kalpana's death showed her distressed inside the hospital while staff appeared to be trying to restrain or calm her.

In the footage, she is heard asking her family to take her home and expressing fear that she would not survive.

Her father, Ramsharan Mishra, later said he had repeatedly asked doctors to examine his daughter and monitor her condition. He has demanded an FIR against those he believes were responsible.

There is currently no basis to present those allegations as established findings.

TL;DR | News At A Glance

Has negligence been proved?

What Has The Hospital Said?

Dr. Rahul Mishra has maintained that there was no medical negligence.

He attributed Kalpana's death to complications and pointed to what he described as insufficient antenatal check-ups before she arrived at the hospital. According to his account, hospital records showed that she had undergone only two previous examinations at a private hospital.

He said her blood pressure and heart rate had increased and that she subsequently lost consciousness.

Dr Mishra also said the treatment provided at the hospital followed medical protocols and that the allegations made by the family were being examined by the inquiry committee.

Why The Superintendent's Removal Matters

The government order changes who is responsible for running Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, but it does not establish that Dr Mishra was removed because of medical negligence.

That distinction matters because the investigation into Kalpana's death is still ongoing.

The viral video has added another layer to the controversy, putting the conduct of hospital officials under scrutiny alongside the questions raised by Kalpana's family about her treatment.

For now, the inquiry will have to establish what happened in the hospital, whether any medical or administrative lapses occurred, and whether further action is warranted.
