Economist and political commentator Parakala Prabhakar is set to join an anti-SIR protest in Delhi on 23 October.
He is married to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, a senior BJP leader, and has publicly criticised the Narendra Modi government’s economic policies.
Prabhakar has also been associated with several political parties and served as a communications adviser to the Andhra Pradesh government.
Who is he, what is his academic background, and how did he move from economics to politics?
Who Is Parakala Prabhakar?
Parakala Prabhakar is an Indian political economist, author and commentator known for analysing the country’s economic policies and political developments. He has worked in political parties, government communications and policy research, and has also presented current affairs programmes on Telugu television.
His public profile often intersects with that of his wife, Nirmala Sitharaman, who has served as Union Finance Minister since 2019, apart from her earlier role as Defence Minister. However, Prabhakar has developed a distinct public voice, frequently questioning the policies of the government led by the party his wife represents.
He is also the managing director of RightFOLIO, a Hyderabad-based knowledge and communications enterprise.
From JNU To The London School Of Economics
Prabhakar’s academic journey took him from Andhra Pradesh to New Delhi and then to the United Kingdom.
He completed his undergraduate studies at Andhra Loyola College in Vijayawada before pursuing his master’s degree and MPhil at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). He later earned a doctorate from the London School of Economics, where his research examined the political economy of security.
Prabhakar met Sitharaman at JNU, where both were studying during the early 1980s. They married in 1986 and later moved to London while pursuing their academic and professional interests.
His background in economics and political analysis subsequently shaped his work in research, communications and public commentary.
His Political Journey Was Not A Straight Line
Prabhakar’s political career has crossed party lines. He was associated with the Congress before joining the BJP, where he served as a spokesperson for its Andhra Pradesh unit.
In 2008, he became a founding member and spokesperson of actor Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam Party. He left the party in 2009, before the state elections, following disagreements over its functioning and candidate selection.
He later became involved in the movement opposing the division of Andhra Pradesh and helped establish the Visalandhra Mahasabha, which advocated keeping the state united.
In July 2014, the government led by N Chandrababu Naidu appointed him as its communications adviser, with the rank of a Cabinet minister. He held the position until June 2018, when he resigned amid political criticism of his appointment.
His career shows that his political associations have changed over time, rather than following the same path as Sitharaman’s rise within the BJP.
Prabhakar’s Criticism On The Modi Government?
Prabhakar has become a prominent critic of the BJP-led Centre, particularly on economic management, unemployment, inequality and the functioning of democratic institutions.
In his 2023 book, The Crooked Timber of New India: Essays on a Republic in Crisis, he examines developments under the Modi government and argues that the country faces serious challenges involving its economy, social harmony and democratic institutions.
He has also questioned demonetisation and the government’s handling of economic data. In public discussions, he has argued that democracy requires debate, disagreement and consultation rather than decisions being taken without sufficient discussion.
His criticism has attracted attention partly because he is married to Sitharaman. But his public arguments are his own, and his political views should not automatically be treated as representing his wife’s position.
Why Is Parakala Prabhakar Joining The Anti-SIR Protest?
Prabhakar is expected to join the People’s March to Restore Democracy on 23 October 2026. Organised by the People Against SIR alliance, the protest will demand that the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls be scrapped and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resign.
Prabhakar has strongly criticised the exercise. In an interview with Rediff published on 7 October, he described SIR as a “bloodless political genocide”, arguing that removing eligible voters from electoral rolls could deprive them of their voting rights.
He has also called for the exercise to be scrapped and the 2024 electoral rolls to be restored.
The alliance argues that eligible voters have been removed from electoral rolls and is demanding that their names be reinstated. These remain the protesters’ allegations and demands.
Prabhakar announced his participation in the upcoming march with a post on X on 21 October, writing: “Har gali mein Jantar Mantar! Friday, 23 October 2026. People's march to restore democracy. Let's rise to the challenge.”
He had also participated in a protest at Bengaluru’s Freedom Park on 8 October alongside actor-activist Prakash Raj and other public figures.
The 23 October mobilisation is expected to bring together activists, lawyers, student representatives, farmers’ leaders and authors. The organisers have also invited parties in the INDIA opposition bloc to participate, although their involvement has not been confirmed.
