The Opposition’s protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Delhi on 6 October began as a march towards the Election Commission. It ended hours later with Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra being detained by Delhi Police.
In between, the siblings climbed barricades, entered the Akashvani Bhavan premises and staged an hours-long sit-in with other Opposition leaders.
Their presence together became one of the defining visuals of the protest.
The INDIA bloc had set out from Parliament demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation and raising allegations related to electoral rolls and “vote chori”. But police stopped the march before it could reach the Election Commission’s headquarters.
What followed turned the planned march into a prolonged standoff.
What Happened At The Protest?
The march began from Parliament in the morning, with Rahul and Priyanka among the Opposition leaders heading towards Nirvachan Sadan.
Police had put up barricades along the route. As the protesters tried to move forward, the security cordon held them back.
Rahul climbed onto a barricade and waved the Tricolour as the protesters were stopped.
Priyanka, meanwhile, was among the leaders detained near the barricades and taken towards a police bus.
But she did not remain there for long.
As the protest shifted towards the nearby Akashvani Bhavan, Rahul and Priyanka were soon together again.
The two, along with other Congress leaders, made their way into the Akashvani Bhavan premises after the march was stopped.
Police and staff initially tried to prevent their entry. The leaders eventually remained inside the premises and began a sit-in, demanding that they be allowed to meet the Election Commission.
The Eight-Hour Standoff
What was supposed to be a march had now become a sit-in.
Rahul and Priyanka remained at Akashvani Bhavan for several hours along with other Congress leaders. Police asked the protesters to leave the premises, but they continued to stay there.
The standoff stretched into the evening.
Rahul spoke to reporters from inside the premises and reiterated the Opposition’s allegations against the Election Commission.
As the hours passed, the police eventually moved to clear the site.
Rahul and Priyanka were among the Opposition leaders detained and taken to the New Police Lines at Kingsway Camp. Reports put the number of people detained at around 250 to 260, including Opposition MPs.
The two were later released by Delhi Police after 10 pm.
But even after the detention, the protest produced another striking moment involving the siblings.
Priyanka went to the New Police Lines where Rahul and other detained leaders were being held. She was seen climbing over a gate at the premises as Congress workers and others gathered there.
How Rahul And Priyanka Took The Centre Stage
For anyone who watched the events unfold, the repeated sight of Rahul and Priyanka together was difficult to miss.
They were together when the march was stopped.
They were together when the protest moved inside Akashvani Bhavan.
And they were both detained after refusing to end the sit-in.
Their presence at the protest was political, but the relationship between the two goes back much further than their careers in politics.
Rahul is about two years older than Priyanka. Rahul was born in 1970, while Priyanka was born in 1972.
The children of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi grew up in a family where politics, public attention and security were part of everyday life.
Long before they stood together against police barricades, Rahul was Priyanka’s older brother.
When Priyanka Gandhi Got Married
One of the most personal moments in their shared public history came in 1997, when Priyanka married Robert Vadra.
Rahul was 26 at the time.
He was present during the wedding ceremonies at the Gandhi family residence in New Delhi, years before either sibling would occupy their current positions in Indian politics.
At Priyanka’s wedding, Rahul was there as her brother.
Nearly three decades later, he was standing beside her at a political protest that ended with both being taken into police custody.
Their Political Journeys
Rahul entered electoral politics in 2004, when he won the Lok Sabha seat from Amethi.
Priyanka took a different route. She had campaigned for the Congress for years before formally taking up a senior organisational role in 2019.
She eventually made her electoral debut in the 2024 Wayanad Lok Sabha by-election, winning the seat after Rahul chose to retain Rae Bareli.
That brought both siblings into Parliament.
Since then, their appearances together have become part of the Congress’s public political campaign, whether during elections, party programmes or protests.
The 6 October demonstration was another such moment, but one that ended in an unusually long confrontation with the police.
The Legal Fallout Of The Protest
The events at Akashvani Bhavan did not end with the release of the detained leaders.
On 7 October, Delhi Police registered an FIR against Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and others over their alleged unauthorised entry into the premises during the protest.
Police said the case followed a complaint alleging that the protesters entered the complex without permission. The allegation is now part of a police case and does not establish guilt.
The Election Commission, meanwhile, said no political party had formally sought an appointment with it before the protest. The Opposition has continued to demand answers from the poll panel and the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar.
So, what began as an Opposition march against the Chief Election Commissioner ended with a detention, an FIR and a night-long political confrontation.
And through much of it, Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi remained side by side.
For the two siblings, 6 October was yet another public moment in a relationship that has moved from family occasions to the centre of Indian politics.
