A relationship gone sour, jealousy and a desire for revenge allegedly lie at the centre of a murder case in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Seventeen-year-old MD Abhiram left home after receiving an Instagram message asking him to meet someone. A day later, his body was found stuffed inside a sack.

But what did Abhiram have to do with a dispute involving a former relationship? And why did a personal grudge allegedly take such a deadly turn?

The police investigation has uncovered a chain of events that raises more questions about the circumstances leading to his death.

What Happened?

Abhiram, a Plus Two student and resident of Pangappara, left home at around 3 pm on Sunday, 1 November, telling his family that he was going to meet a friend.

According to his father, Abhiram later said he would return shortly. However, his phone became unreachable, and he did not come home.

Worried about his whereabouts, the family approached the Sreekaryam police station and filed a missing-person complaint.

Police began examining his phone records, Instagram conversations and CCTV footage to establish his last movements.

On Monday, 2 November, investigators recovered his body from an isolated plot near Pangappara. It had been placed inside a sack and covered with leaves.

The preliminary investigation indicated that Abhiram had been strangled.

What Was The Alleged Love Triangle?

According to police, the murder was linked to a relationship dispute involving the prime accused, his former girlfriend and her new boyfriend.

The 17-year-old suspect had reportedly separated from his girlfriend, who later began dating another boy, a friend of Abhiram. Investigators believe the accused blamed the new boyfriend for the breakup and planned to lure him to an isolated location to attack him.

However, Abhiram allegedly became an unintended target. According to The Indian Express, the accused took control of his 18-year-old girlfriend's Instagram account and impersonated her to message Abhiram, persuading him to meet at Pangappara.

After Abhiram arrived, the accused allegedly asked him to call his friend, the intended target. When the friend refused to come, an argument broke out. As Abhiram tried to leave, the 17-year-old allegedly attacked and strangled him. Police suspect another accused, Umar Mufathar, also took part in the killing.

The two allegedly put Abhiram's body in a sack and abandoned it at the secluded location.

Who Has Been Arrested And What Action Has The Police Taken?

Police have identified three accused: a 17-year-old boy known to Abhiram, Anantha, 18, whose Instagram account was allegedly used to lure him, and Umar Mufathar, a history-sheeter suspected of assisting in the murder. Police have accused Anantha of conspiracy.

Call records, Instagram messages and CCTV footage helped investigators trace the suspects. Police also found that the prime accused and Umar had been involved in earlier theft cases together.

Police added Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with murder, and the state formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) with police, cyber and forensic personnel.

The juvenile was sent to an observation home until 10 November, while the two adults were remanded to judicial custody. Police Commissioner Arul R B Krishna said investigators would explore appointing a special public prosecutor and examine whether the juvenile could be tried as an adult.

The Bigger Question: How Safe Are Online Interactions?

The case raises concerns about online impersonation and the risks of trusting social media messages, particularly when they appear to come from someone familiar.

It also brings attention to violence involving teenagers, where relationship disputes, jealousy, resentment and feelings of revenge can escalate into serious crimes. Such incidents raise questions about how young people handle breakups, rejection and conflict, and whether warning signs of escalating hostility are being recognised.

The investigation is still examining each accused person's role and whether anyone else was involved.
