A DNA test has confirmed that a 20-year-old woman's father raped and impregnated her in Mumbai. The shocking revelation came after police tested 17 men. Only the father matched the fetal DNA.
The case surfaced in September 2025. The woman, who has speech and hearing disabilities plus a mental health condition, told her grandmother about stomach discomfort.
Doctors at Cama and Albless Hospital examined her. They found she was five months pregnant. The hospital alerted police, who started an investigation.
Due to her disabilities, she struggled to communicate and could not give a statement at first. Police questioned her father. He denied any abuse and could not explain the pregnancy. He refused to file a complaint.
After counselling, the woman agreed to lodge a police complaint. Early probes led to arrests of a 34-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy.
Blood samples from over 17 suspects, plus the fetal sample, went for forensic DNA testing. On 27 January 2026, the report confirmed the father's DNA matched the fetus. Police questioned him again. His role in the rape was established, and they arrested him.
Police registered an FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. It included charges for rape of a woman incapable of consent and sexual assault on a mentally or physically disabled person under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act.
The woman later revealed assaults by multiple people in the past.
Maharashtra saw nearly 3,000 rape cases in 2023, fourth highest in India per NCRB data. Mumbai reported around 1,000 of those. NCRB also notes that 89 per cent of rape cases in India involve known perpetrators.
