A relationship that began on social media eventually brought a Thai woman to Kanpur, thousands of kilometres away from home.

The 35-year-old woman had travelled to India hoping to meet the man she said she had married, and settle an issue that had been troubling her for months.

But her visit to Kanpur led to a police complaint and the arrest of a local businessman.

The case has since raised questions about their relationship, the money involved and what the woman says she discovered after reaching the city.

Here is how the case unfolded.

How It Started

According to the woman, Upsorn’s, complaint, she first meta man identified as Irfan through social media around four years ago.

Irfan reportedly travelled to Thailand for business, where the two became close. Upsorn, who runs a restaurant and canteen in Thailand, said Irfan told her he was unmarried.

Around two years ago, she says, the two got married in Thailand according to local customs.

She later continued her relationship with him as he travelled between India and Thailand.

What About The Money?

After their alleged marriage, Upsorn says Irfan began asking her for money, citing business requirements and plans to expand his work.

She said she gave him around Rs. 60 lakh in several instalments.

According to her complaint, the money came from her own earnings as well as loans and money borrowed from relatives.

Reports also mentioned that she spent large amounts on expensive motorcycles for Irfan. However, the exact breakdown of the Rs. 60 lakh is among the details police are now checking.

The situation changed when she began asking for the money back.

She alleges that Irfan gave her different reasons for delaying repayment and eventually stopped responding to her calls and messages.

According to India Today, Irfan returned to India in February 2026, after which communication gradually stopped.

Why Did She Travel To Kanpur?

Upsorn says her own businesses were facing financial difficulties and she was struggling to repay the money she had borrowed.

After repeated attempts to contact Irfan failed, she decided to travel to India.

She arrived in Kanpur in early October with an acquaintance and went to the address she had for Irfan.

That visit allegedly revealed something she says she had not known during their relationship: Irfan was already married and had three children.

NDTV reported that his first marriage had lasted around 12 years. Police are also verifying the marriage-related details as part of the investigation.

What Happened During Confrontation?

Upsorn then confronted Irfan about the alleged deception and the money.

She alleged that Irfan and his family members abused and assaulted her.

She further alleged that Irfan told her she would have to convert to Islam if she wanted to stay with him or recover her money. She also said she was asked to wear a burqa.

These are allegations made in her complaint and have not been established in court. Police have said they are verifying the facts.

What Has Police Done?

Following her complaint, Kanpur Police registered an FIR at Anwarganj police station and arrested Irfan.

Police have invoked provisions of Uttar Pradesh's anti-conversion law in connection with the allegations. The woman has also undergone a medical examination, with the report awaited.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Manjay Singh said Irfan had been arrested and that the woman's allegations were being examined. Police also said Irfan admitted to marrying the woman.

The investigation is now focused on several questions: whether the two were legally married, whether Irfan concealed his existing marriage, where the alleged Rs. 60 lakh went, and whether the allegations of assault and pressure to convert are supported by evidence.

Police are examining the marriage documents, bank transactions and other material submitted by the woman.

The Bigger Question: How Much Can You Really Know About Someone Online?

Cases like this raise a larger question about relationships that begin and develop largely through social media.

People can spend months or even years talking to someone online, sharing personal details and making plans together, while important parts of their lives may remain difficult to verify.

In cross-border relationships, that gap can become even wider. Different countries, legal systems, languages and financial arrangements can make it harder to independently verify a person's background or claims.

The case also raises questions about how financial trust develops in online relationships, especially when one partner begins sending large amounts of money to the other.

While the allegations in this case will have to be established through the investigation and court proceedings, it is a reminder that knowing someone online is not always the same as knowing their circumstances offline.
