Prime Minister Narendra Modi turns 76 on 17 September 2026.

Born in Vadnagar, Gujarat, in 1950, Modi’s political journey has taken him from the RSS and BJP organisation to the Gujarat chief minister’s office and eventually the Prime Minister’s Office.

His career has spanned more than five decades, three terms as prime minister and several major political and policy moments.

But the story of Narendra Modi began long before he entered electoral politics.

From his childhood and family background to his education and early years in the RSS, the journey offers a closer look at the making of one of India’s most prominent political figures.

Where Did Narendra Modi Grow Up?

Narendra Damodardas Modi was born on 17 September 1950 in Vadnagar, then part of Bombay State and now in Gujarat.

He was the third of six children of Damodardas Mulchand Modi and Hiraben Modi. His family lived in modest circumstances, and Modi has spoken about helping at the family tea stall.

The Prime Minister’s official biography says he grew up in a small house and balanced school with work at the family tea stall. The Economic Times, in a September 2026 profile, also highlighted his mother, teachers, Swami Vivekananda and RSS mentor Lakshmanrao Inamdar as important influences on his early life.

Modi has often linked his early experiences of poverty with his decision to dedicate his life to public service. In a TIME interview, he said that seeing poverty closely became an early motivation for him.

His personal life has also remained a subject of public interest. Modi’s 2024 Lok Sabha election affidavit listed Jashodaben as his spouse. It also recorded no dependent children.

What Did Modi Study?

Modi completed his schooling in Vadnagar.

According to his parliamentary profile and his 2024 election affidavit, he completed a Bachelor of Arts from Delhi University in 1978 and a Master of Arts in Political Science from Gujarat University in 1983.

His education came alongside a growing interest in public life.

The writings of Swami Vivekananda had a significant influence on him. Modi has also spoken about his travels across India as a young man and his interest in spirituality before he became deeply involved with the RSS.

Why Did Modi Enter Politics?

Modi’s political journey began through the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) rather than through an elected position.

He joined the organisation as a young man and eventually became a full-time pracharak. During the Emergency in the 1970s, he was involved in activities opposing the Emergency regime, according to his official biography.

The RSS later became the foundation of his organisational career.

In the 1980s, Modi moved into the BJP’s organisational structure. He became a key organiser in Gujarat and later took on national responsibilities.

His work was largely behind the scenes at first. He focused on party organisation, election strategy and building the BJP’s presence in Gujarat.

That changed in 2001.

From BJP Organiser To Gujarat Chief Minister

In October 2001, Modi became the Chief Minister of Gujarat, replacing Keshubhai Patel.

He went on to serve as chief minister until 2014, winning state elections in 2002, 2007 and 2012. Parliament records list him as a four-term Gujarat MLA between 2002 and 2014.

His years in Gujarat became central to his political identity.

Supporters pointed to infrastructure, investment, industrial development and administrative reforms under his government. The phrase “Gujarat model” subsequently became an important part of his national campaign.

But his tenure was also marked by one of the most contentious episodes of his political career.

The 2002 Gujarat Violence

In February 2002, violence broke out across Gujarat following the burning of a coach of the Sabarmati Express at Godhra, in which 59 people died.

The subsequent communal violence left more than 1,000 people dead according to official figures, with Muslims making up the majority of those killed.

Modi was Gujarat chief minister at the time, and allegations were later made about the role of his administration in the violence.

A Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team investigated allegations against Modi and others. In 2012, the SIT submitted a report finding insufficient evidence to prosecute Modi for a larger conspiracy.

In June 2022, the Supreme Court dismissed Zakia Jafri’s challenge to the SIT’s findings, effectively upholding the closure of the allegations against Modi in that proceeding.

The 2002 violence nevertheless remains an important part of discussions about Modi’s political career.

The 2014 Leap To Delhi

After more than a decade in Gujarat, Modi became the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 Lok Sabha election.

The campaign presented him as a leader focused on development, economic growth, jobs and stronger governance.

The BJP won 282 seats on its own, giving it a majority in the Lok Sabha. Modi took oath as Prime Minister on 26 May 2014.

In 2019, the BJP increased its tally to 303 seats, and Modi returned for a second term.

In 2024, the BJP won 240 seats, below the 272-seat majority mark. The BJP-led NDA won enough seats to form the government, and Modi took oath for a third consecutive term on 9 June 2024.

That made him the second Indian prime minister after Jawaharlal Nehru to serve three consecutive terms.

What Has Defined Modi’s Government?

Over his years as prime minister, Modi’s governments have introduced or expanded several major programmes.

These include Jan Dhan Yojana, Swachh Bharat Mission, Ujjwala Yojana, Ayushman Bharat, PM Awas Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission and Digital India.

Government figures say these programmes have expanded access to banking, sanitation, LPG connections, healthcare, housing and tap water.

His governments have also overseen major policy decisions such as the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax in 2017, the 2016 demonetisation of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 notes, and the 2019 constitutional changes relating to Jammu and Kashmir.

Internationally, India’s G20 presidency in 2023 became another major moment of his tenure. The New Delhi summit produced agreements and initiatives covering areas including sustainable development, digital public infrastructure and climate-related cooperation.

But His Policies Have Also Drawn Criticism

Modi’s governments have faced sustained criticism over several decisions.

The 2016 demonetisation created significant disruption as people queued at banks and ATMs to exchange or deposit old notes. The government had presented the move as a measure against black money, corruption, counterfeit currency and terror financing.

The Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019, which was implemented in 2024, also triggered protests and political controversy. The law provides a route to Indian citizenship for specified non-Muslim religious minorities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan who meet the statutory conditions. Critics, including rights groups, have argued that its exclusion of Muslims is discriminatory, while the government has defended it as a humanitarian measure for persecuted minorities.

Questions around religious tensions, press freedom and minority rights have also featured in international and domestic criticism of the Modi government. These remain contested political issues, with the government rejecting allegations that its policies discriminate against citizens on religious grounds.

How Did Modi Build His Public Image?

Modi’s public image has been closely tied to his personal story.

The journey from Vadnagar and a family tea stall to the Prime Minister’s Office became a recurring theme in his political communication.

He also built an unusually strong digital presence for an Indian political leader. His communication strategy includes social media, direct addresses, Mann Ki Baat, public events and highly produced campaign messaging.

Yoga, books, poetry, spirituality and his interest in Swami Vivekananda have also become recurring parts of his public persona. The Prime Minister’s official profile describes yoga as part of his daily routine and notes his interest in writing.

That combination of personal storytelling, direct communication and political organisation has remained a defining feature of his public life.

Modi’s journey now spans more than five decades of public life.

He began as an RSS worker, moved into BJP organisation, became Gujarat chief minister in 2001 and reached the Prime Minister’s Office in 2014.

His tenure has brought major welfare programmes, economic and administrative reforms, foreign-policy initiatives and constitutional changes. It has also generated intense debate over economic decisions, communal tensions, citizenship policy, civil liberties and the relationship between politics and religion.

At 76, Narendra Modi remains at the centre of Indian public life, with a political career that stretches from the lanes of Vadnagar to the highest elected office in the country.
