For a young software professional, financial pressure can build quietly through loans, medical expenses, family disputes and legal costs. When several such pressures come together, the impact can extend far beyond money.
On Saturday, 3 October, 28-year-old software engineer Sambhav Jain from Manesar, Gurugram, died after falling from the 43rd floor of the Supernova Spira tower in Noida’s Sector 94. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, including his financial liabilities, family situation, divorce settlement and messages about his mental health.
Here is what is known so far.
What Happened At Supernova?
Sambhav reached the Supernova complex at around 3 pm on Friday after booking an Airbnb for one day. Police said he was alone in the room.
The following afternoon, an AC repair team working in a nearby flat noticed him on the outer ledge of a balcony. The workers tried to persuade him to move back and one person attempted to pull him away from the railing.
Despite their attempts, Sambhav fell from the 43rd floor and died at the spot. Police and a forensic team reached the location, prepared a panchnama and collected evidence. CCTV footage from the building and surrounding areas is also being examined.
Who Was Sambhav Jain?
Sambhav was a software engineer and a resident of Manesar in Gurugram.
According to police, he had married in 2024 and the couple had a son in 2025. The child was born prematurely during the seventh month of pregnancy and required prolonged medical treatment.
Police told India Today that Sambhav’s family said around Rs. 40 lakh had already been spent on the child’s treatment, with further medical expenses continuing.
A few months after the child’s birth, Sambhav and his wife developed differences. His wife later filed for divorce. The two sides eventually reached a settlement. Police said the settlement was around Rs. 15 lakh. An initial payment of about Rs. 7 lakh had reportedly been made, while another instalment of approximately Rs. 7.50 lakh was pending.
So, Why Did He Do It?
There is no final police finding on a single reason.
The investigation has instead pointed to several pressures in Sambhav’s life.
Police said he was dealing with debt, expenses related to his son’s treatment and a family dispute. Officers also found messages in which he had discussed depression and suicidal thoughts with his father in the three or four days before his death.
His father had reportedly asked him to return home and told him that the family would handle the situation.
Police also found a video recorded on Sambhav’s phone before the incident. His chats, the video and other evidence are being examined as part of the investigation.
Police have also rejected claims circulating on social media that Sambhav was facing a Rs. 3 crore alimony payment. According to the police, the divorce settlement was approximately Rs. 15 lakh.
What Is The Police Investigation?
The investigation is still underway.
Police have questioned family members and are examining Sambhav’s financial liabilities and family circumstances. They are also reviewing CCTV footage, his phone, chats and the video found on the device.
His body was sent for post-mortem examination, while forensic teams inspected the scene and collected evidence. Police have said the exact circumstances leading to his death remain under investigation.
The Bigger Debate Around Divorce And Money
The case has also brought attention to the financial side of divorce, particularly for men who may face maintenance, settlement and legal expenses.
A 2025 survey by 1 Finance Magazine, covering 1,258 people over six months, found that 42% of men surveyed had taken a loan for alimony payments or divorce proceedings. It also reported that 49% of men surveyed spent more than Rs. 5 lakh on divorce proceedings, excluding alimony.
But these findings should not be used to claim that divorce or alimony caused Sambhav’s death. His case involved several reported factors, and police have not identified one definitive cause.
There is also an important legal point. Under Sections 24 and 25 of the Hindu Marriage Act, maintenance and permanent alimony can be sought by either the husband or the wife, depending on circumstances including income and financial needs. The law does not make maintenance an automatic payment from men to women.
The larger question, therefore, is not simply about who pays whom after a divorce. It is about how financial pressure, family conflict, legal proceedings, medical expenses and mental health can intersect, particularly when someone is already struggling.
In Sambhav’s case, the police investigation will determine how these circumstances came together.
