A film made in Nagaland, in the Konyak language, has suddenly found itself in the conversation around the Oscars.
Angh, the feature debut of Naga filmmaker Theja Rio, won the Platform Award at the Toronto International Film Festival on 20 September 2026. The win has given the film a route to consideration at the 2027 Academy Awards.
But there is a twist.
India has already selected the Marathi film Gondhal as its official entry for the Best International Feature Film category. So how can two Indian films be in the running?
The answer lies in a new Oscar rule introduced in 2026.
So, What Happened With Angh?
Angh became the first Indian film to win TIFF’s Platform Award.
The award is given to the best film in TIFF’s competitive Platform programme, which focuses on distinctive directorial voices. A five-member jury awarded the film the CAD 20,000 prize.
More importantly, the 2026 edition of the award carries a new Oscar connection.
Under the Academy’s updated rules, winning the Platform Award at TIFF can provide a non-English-language film with a separate route to consideration in the International Feature Film category.
That means Angh does not need to be India’s official selection to enter the Academy’s consideration process.
It is important to note that Angh has not been nominated for an Oscar yet. The Academy still has to review eligible submissions, followed by the shortlist and nomination stages.
What Is TIFF?
The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is an annual film festival held in Toronto, Canada. It showcases films from around the world, including independent, international and major studio productions.
Founded in 1976, TIFF has grown into one of the world’s major film festivals and an important platform for filmmakers to present their work to international audiences.
What Is Angh About?
Set in 1963 Nagaland, Angh follows an ageing Konyak village chief and his son, who are among the last people holding on to their ancestral faith and way of life.
The story unfolds in an isolated village as the world around them begins to change.
An American missionary arrives, bringing new influences into the community. The film explores what happens to a family and a culture when traditional beliefs come into contact with an outside world.
At its centre is the relationship between a father and son.
The film is shot entirely in the Konyak language and was filmed on 16mm. It features Indigenous Naga actors alongside British actor Douglas Henshall.
Who Directed Angh?
Angh is directed by Theja Rio, a filmmaker from Nagaland and a graduate of the UK's National Film and Television School.
This is his feature directorial debut.
Rio had previously made a short film also titled Angh. The short won a Special Jury Award at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival and screened at other international festivals.
His later short Ade (On A Sunday) premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and won Best Film at the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival in 2023.
Who Is In The Cast?
The film stars Anghlong Konyak in the lead role, with Douglas Henshall playing an American missionary.
Henshall is known internationally for projects including Shetland and Outlander.
The cast also includes Sobino Rengma, Genpai Konyak, Amah Konyak and Wangton Konyak.
But What About Gondhal?
This is where the Oscar story gets interesting.
India's Film Federation of India selected the Marathi-language film Gondhal as the country's official submission for the 2027 Oscars in the Best International Feature Film category.
Angh had also been considered during India's selection process. According to the Indian Express, it was among the final three films considered alongside Gondhal and Ikkis.
However, Angh later secured another path by winning TIFF's Platform Award.
So, Gondhal remains India's official submission, while Angh can seek consideration through the Academy's qualifying-festival route.
How Does The Oscar Route Work?
The Academy defines an International Feature Film as a feature-length film produced outside the US with more than 50% of its dialogue in languages other than English.
Traditionally, each eligible country selects one official film through an Academy-approved selection committee.
For the 99th Oscars, however, the Academy added a second route.
A non-English-language film can qualify for consideration by winning one of six specified festival awards:
Platform Award at TIFF
Golden Bear at Berlin
Busan Award for Best Film
Palme d'Or at Cannes
World Cinema Grand Jury Prize at Sundance
Golden Lion at Venice
Angh reached this route through its TIFF win.
What Happens Next?
Winning the TIFF award does not automatically make Angh an Oscar nominee.
The Academy will first review the film's eligibility and submitted materials.
The International Feature Film shortlist will contain 15 films, with the Academy scheduled to announce the shortlist on 15 December 2026.
Those 15 films will then compete for the five final nomination slots.
So, for now, Angh has earned a place in the Oscar consideration process, while Gondhal remains India's official submission.
India's Oscar Journey So Far
India has reached the final five of the International Feature Film category three times.
Mother India was nominated in 1957, Salaam Bombay! in 1988 and Lagaan in 2001.
Under the current 15-film shortlist system, Chhello Show (Last Film Show) in 2022 and Homebound in 2025 advanced to the shortlist.
There is also an important distinction between an Indian film and a film submitted by India. For example, Deepa Mehta's Water, directed by an Indian filmmaker, was submitted by Canada and received an Oscar nomination in 2006.
For Angh, the next milestone is therefore not an Oscar nomination yet. It is making it through the Academy's eligibility and shortlist process.
And that makes the TIFF win significant: a film rooted in Nagaland's Konyak culture now has a direct route into one of cinema's biggest award races.
