Land disputes can turn bitter when questions of ownership, inheritance or a property sale enter the picture.
The latest NCRB report recorded 58.86 lakh cognisable crimes across India in 2024, a 6% decline from the previous year. But behind those numbers are individual disputes that can sometimes spill into allegations of violence.
One such case has emerged from Pune district, where an elderly couple were allegedly attacked by their own sons over a land sale.
What happened that evening, and why did a family dispute end up with a police complaint?
What Happened In Tarangwadi?
The incident took place around 6 pm on 30 August 2026 in Tarangwadi village in Indapur tehsil of Pune district.
According to the police complaint, 65-year-old farmer Tukaram Kisan Raut was out walking with his wife, Anjana Raut, when their two sons, Sanjay Raut and Rajendra Raut, allegedly followed them in a car.
The sons allegedly confronted their parents over the sale of land registered in their mother's name.
The argument then turned physical.
According to the FIR, the brothers allegedly abused their parents and attacked them with wooden sticks.
Tukaram suffered injuries to his face, shoulder, back and thighs. Anjana, who was described as ailing, was allegedly hit on her right wrist and waist.
The complaint also alleged that the brothers threatened to kill their parents if the land sale was not cancelled.
Why Were The Sons Angry?
The dispute centred on land that belonged to their mother, according to the police and the complaint.
During the alleged assault, the brothers reportedly demanded that their parents take back the property they had sold.
The FIR recorded a threat allegedly made during the confrontation, in which the parents were told to take back the land or face consequences.
However, the available reports do not establish the brothers' legal claim over the property or whether they had any ownership rights in it.
That distinction matters.
A disagreement over ownership, inheritance or a sale is a property matter that can be decided through the appropriate legal process. It does not give anyone the right to assault or threaten another person.

The alleged assault happened on a public road.
Passers-by reportedly gathered at the spot and alerted the police.
The injured couple was subsequently taken to the Indapur Sub-District Hospital for treatment.
A video recorded by people at the scene was later shared on social media.
What Police Action Has Been Taken?
Tukaram's complaint led to an FIR at Indapur police station against Sanjay and Rajendra Raut.
Police booked the brothers under provisions dealing with voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous weapons or means, intentional insult intended to provoke a breach of peace, and criminal intimidation.
Under the current Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous weapons or means falls under Section 118(1). It can carry imprisonment of up to three years, a fine of up to Rs. 20,000, or both.
Criminal intimidation is covered by Section 351 of the BNS. Where the alleged threat involves death or grievous hurt, the provision allows punishment of up to seven years, along with a fine.
Intentional insult intended to provoke a breach of peace is covered by Section 352.
The police investigation will establish which allegations and evidence ultimately support the case.
