A woman in Rajasthan has alleged that she was branded a “witch”, accused of being responsible for the deaths of relatives and assaulted by members of her family.
According to a report by The Indian Express, the woman’s complaint alleged that around a dozen relatives attacked her, cut her hair, beat her, tore her clothes and forced her out of her home.
The woman also alleged that she was accused of “eating” her relatives, reflecting a superstition-based belief used against her.
Woman alleges attack by relatives
As reported by The Indian Express, the woman said she was targeted after relatives accused her of being a witch.
Her complaint alleged that the group assaulted her and humiliated her before forcing her to leave her home.
The allegations have not been presented as proof that the woman practised witchcraft. Witchcraft claims are based on superstition and cannot establish that a person caused illness or death.
What about the land dispute?
The woman has also alleged that the incident was connected to a dispute over her land.
The Indian Express report described the land-grab angle as an allegation. It should therefore not be stated as an established motive unless investigators or a court establish it.
The report does not establish that the relatives successfully took possession of the woman’s property.
Why witchcraft accusations are dangerous
Being labelled a witch can expose women to physical violence, humiliation and displacement from their homes or property.
Such accusations have also been documented in other parts of India, where women have been targeted after deaths or illnesses in their communities.
The Indian Express has previously reported on cases in which witch-hunting allegations were linked to disputes over land and property. However, the circumstances and motives have to be established separately in each case.
In Rajasthan, witch-hunting has also been the subject of legislation aimed at preventing the branding and persecution of people as witches.
The latest case highlights how allegations rooted in superstition can lead to serious violence, while the exact circumstances and motive behind the incident remain matters for investigation.
