A case of alleged neglect and confinement has come to light in Mahoba, where a 70-year-old retired railway employee was found dead inside his residence, and his daughter was discovered in a critical state. Police have launched an investigation and taken action against the caretakers who were living in the house.
The deceased has been identified as Omprakash Singh Rathore, a former senior clerk with Indian Railways.
Discovery After Relatives Were Informed
The incident came to light on 29 December 2025, when Rathore’s relatives were informed about his death and reached his house in Mahoba. Upon arrival, they alerted local authorities.
Police found Rathore deceased inside the house. His body was later sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Officials have stated that the cause will be confirmed only after medical reports are received.
Daughter Found Alive but Severely Unwell
Inside the same house, Rathore’s daughter Rashmi, who has mental disabilities, was found alive but in an extremely weak and malnourished condition, according to police.
Officials said she was unable to move properly and required immediate medical attention. She was shifted to hospital for treatment, where doctors began stabilisation and care. Police have not issued a detailed medical bulletin on her condition so far.
Descriptions of her physical state shared publicly are based on statements from relatives and police observations, not on a formal medical assessment.
Caretakers Lived in the Same House
After the death of his wife in 2016, Rathore had been living alone with his daughter. Due to age and caregiving responsibilities, he employed a couple, Ram Prakash Kushwaha and his wife Ramdevi, as caretakers to assist with household work and to help look after his daughter.
Police confirmed that the caretakers were residing in the same house at the time of the incident.
Allegations of Confinement and Neglect
According to statements given by family members and preliminary police findings, the father and daughter were allegedly kept isolated within the house for an extended period.
Relatives have alleged that they were discouraged from meeting Rathore and were told that he did not wish to see visitors. Police have stated that these claims are being verified as part of the investigation.
Authorities are examining whether the alleged isolation and lack of care continued for several years. At present, this duration remains an allegation and has not been judicially established.
Police Action and Ongoing Investigation
Uttar Pradesh Police confirmed that a case has been registered and that the caretakers have been taken into custody for questioning. Further legal action will depend on post-mortem findings, medical reports, and witness statements.
Police said they are investigating multiple aspects, including:
- The circumstances leading to Rathore’s death
- The condition and treatment of his daughter
- Allegations of confinement and neglect
- Any possible misuse of authority or trust
Officials stressed that conclusions will be drawn only after the investigation is completed.
Case Raises Concerns About Caregiver Oversight
The incident has drawn attention to the risks faced by elderly individuals and persons with disabilities who depend entirely on caregivers. Authorities have stated that accountability will be fixed strictly in accordance with law once all facts are established.
The investigation is ongoing, and police have said further details will be shared as and when they are officially confirmed.
