A light-hearted talk-show appearance turned into a public debate after Sanjay Dutt spoke about the state of peace in India.

The actor appeared on Shekhar Suman’s Shekhar Tonite for a Gandhi Jayanti special episode on 2 October. During the conversation, Dutt spoke about India, briefly stepped into his Munna Bhai persona and imagined what he would do if he became the Prime Minister.

A clip from the conversation later circulated online, with one of his comments about not feeling the same peace as before in India drawing criticism and political reactions.

Dutt has since issued two clarifications, saying the exchange was scripted and intended as humour and satire. Shekhar Suman has also defended him.

Here’s what happened.

How It Started?

While speaking about India and its people, Dutt said Indians are large-hearted and hospitable and that there should be peace in the country.

He then said he could no longer feel that same peace and expressed hope that those days would return.

The remark was made during a wider conversation about the country. However, a portion of it began circulating separately online.

According to NDTV, Dutt’s comments were subsequently interpreted differently from the context in which they were made.

That led to criticism on social media, with the remark being viewed by some as a comment on the current political and social situation in India.

Then Came The “Munna Bhai” Act

The conversation did not stop with Dutt discussing peace.

He also slipped into his iconic Munna Bhai character and imagined himself as the Prime Minister for five minutes.

In the satirical segment, he referred to Mahatma Gandhi’s three monkeys and joked about needing a fourth one to address wrongdoing.

He also used the idea of “Gandhigiri”, a theme strongly associated with Munna Bhai, to make his point about love, goodwill and correcting what is wrong.

The combination of political references, humour and his comments about peace became the focus of the online debate.

What Happened After The Show?

On 4 October, Dutt addressed the criticism through a post on X.

He said he never intended to hurt, offend or disrespect any individual, community or institution.

More importantly, he explained that the remarks were part of a scripted conversation that was meant to be light-hearted and humorous.

Dutt said the segment drew from the humour and satire associated with Munna Bhai, particularly the idea of “Gandhigiri”. According to him, the intended message was one of love, warmth, togetherness and goodwill.

He added that his words had unfortunately been interpreted outside that context.

He later posted a video clarification as well, acknowledging that some people strongly disagreed with or were surprised by his words.

In the video, Dutt reiterated that the exchange was scripted and said the remarks should not be taken as his personal views.

Shekhar Suman Comes To His Defence

The host of the show, Shekhar Suman, also responded to the controversy.

Speaking to NDTV, Suman said Dutt has huge respect for India and its people. He described the actor’s comments as innocuous and positive and said Dutt should not be criticised for something he did not intend to say or mean.

Suman also pointed to the format of Shekhar Tonite, describing it as a satirical programme.

His defence was based on the same explanation Dutt had offered: that the segment was scripted and intended to be humorous rather than a serious political statement.

What Is The Political Reaction?

The controversy did not remain limited to social media.

Congress leader Nana Patole backed Dutt’s original comments and said concerns about safety in India should not be dismissed.

On the other side, a BJP leader criticised Dutt over the remark, adding another political layer to the controversy.

This happened even after Dutt had clarified that the conversation was scripted.

What Happens Next?

For now, the controversy centres on the interpretation of Dutt’s remarks and his subsequent clarification.

The actor has said the comments were scripted and not his personal views. Suman has backed that explanation, while political reactions have continued around the original clip.

As of now, the reports reviewed for this story do not indicate any confirmed police case or legal action against Dutt over the remarks.

The episode also shows how quickly a short clip from a scripted entertainment programme can travel beyond its original context, especially when it touches on politics, national identity or public sentiment.

For Dutt, the immediate response has been to put the wider conversation back into focus: he says the remarks were part of a satirical performance, not a statement of his personal position.
