Who Is Manav Suthar?

Manav Jagdusakumar Suthar was born in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, on 3 August 2002.

He is a left-handed batter and slow left-arm orthodox bowler, and is listed as a bowling all-rounder.

His rise has largely come through domestic cricket. Suthar established himself with Rajasthan before earning opportunities with India A and eventually the senior India side.

Suthar’s Test Debut

Suthar made his Test debut against Afghanistan in Mullanpur in June 2026.

He made an immediate impact, taking 6/33 in Afghanistan’s first innings. According to the ICC, that made him only the fifth Indian bowler to take a five-wicket haul on Test debut. He also became the first Indian to achieve the feat since Ravichandran Ashwin in 2011.

His debut was therefore not simply a first appearance. It was a strong introduction to international cricket.

What Happened In The Sri Lanka Test?

Suthar took his performance to another level in Galle.

He picked up four wickets in Sri Lanka’s first innings before returning figures of 6/55 in the second innings. His match figures of 10/101 helped India bowl Sri Lanka out for 206 while chasing 372.

India eventually won the match by 165 runs.

The 10-wicket haul also made Suthar the youngest Indian to take 10 wickets in an away Test, according to reports following the match.

Why Is Manav Suthar Trending?

The timing of Suthar’s performance is a big part of the attention around him.

He had played only one Test before arriving in Sri Lanka. Just two months after his international debut, he produced a match-winning 10-wicket haul in an overseas Test.

His performance also came at a crucial point in the match. Sri Lanka had shown resistance while chasing 372, but Suthar's six-wicket second innings spell helped India finish the game on the fifth day.

Gill was quick to praise him after the victory, calling Suthar “magnificent” and saying he could serve Indian cricket for a long time.

For Suthar, however, this is still the beginning of his international career. His next challenge will be to build on these performances and establish himself as a regular part of India’s Test plans.
