When India won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, one player stood out.

Sanju Samson finished the tournament with 321 runs in five innings and was named Player of the Tournament.

But Samson’s story did not begin on the world stage. It started more than a decade earlier with a teenager trying to make his mark in the Indian Premier League.

Kerala Roots, Delhi Childhood

Samson was born in 1994 in Pulluvila, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

His father, Samson Viswanath, worked with Delhi Police and had played football at the state level. Because of his father’s job, Samson spent part of his childhood in Delhi before the family moved back to Kerala.

There, he began playing age-group cricket and quickly stood out as a wicketkeeper-batter.

Samson made his first-class debut for Kerala at 17, entering the domestic circuit earlier than many players.

The IPL Break

Samson first entered the IPL system in 2012 with the Kolkata Knight Riders, although he did not play that season.

His breakthrough came in 2013, when the Rajasthan Royals signed him as an 18-year-old.

Samson scored 206 runs that season and won the Emerging Player award.

Former India captain Rahul Dravid, who was part of the Royals setup, mentored several young players including Samson.

A Detour To Delhi

When Rajasthan Royals were suspended for two seasons, Samson moved to the Delhi Daredevils in 2016.

He played two seasons there before returning to Rajasthan when the franchise re-entered the IPL in 2018.

By then, Samson had established himself as a regular top-order batter in the league.

Becoming Rajasthan Royals Captain

In 2021, Rajasthan Royals appointed Samson as captain.

He responded with a strong season, scoring 484 runs in 14 innings.

His consistency continued:

  • 458 runs in IPL 2022, when Rajasthan Royals reached the final

  • 362 runs in IPL 2023

  • 531 runs in IPL 2024, his most productive IPL season.

  • These performances cemented his role as the centre of Rajasthan’s batting line-up.

A Long Wait In The India Team

Samson made his T20 International debut for India in 2015 against Zimbabwe.

However, regular opportunities were limited. There was a gap of more than four years between his first two T20I appearances.

Competition for wicketkeeper-batter spots remained intense. Samson moved in and out of the squad before gradually becoming a regular part of India’s white-ball pool.

He made his ODI debut in 2021.

The Tournament That Changed His Career

Samson’s biggest international moment came at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.

He did not start the tournament as a regular in the playing XI. But once included, he delivered several key innings.

An unbeaten 97 against West Indies helped India progress in the tournament.

Samson followed it with crucial performances in the knockout stage and scored 89 in the final against New Zealand, helping India win the title.

He finished the tournament with 321 runs in five innings and was named Player of the Tournament.

More Than Just Numbers

Samson is known for his calm approach and quiet leadership style.

Unlike many modern cricketers, he rarely attracts attention away from the field. Teammates and coaches often describe him as focused and understated.

Over the years, Samson has grown from a teenage IPL prospect into a franchise captain and a key figure in India’s white-ball cricket setup.

His journey shows how patience and consistency can shape a modern cricketer’s career.
