Earlier in 2025, Olympic boxing icon Mary Kom confirmed that her nearly two-decade-long marriage to Karung Onkholer, also known as Onler, had ended in divorce. While she initially chose not to disclose the reasons, the announcement marked a rare public acknowledgment of personal turmoil by one of India’s most celebrated athletes.
In a recent appearance on Aap Ki Adalat, Mary Kom broke her silence on the matter. Speaking candidly, she alleged that financial misconduct by her former husband had deeply shaken her trust. According to her, this breach ultimately led to the breakdown of their marriage.
Following her remarks, Onler responded publicly, rejecting the allegations made against him. He, in turn, made counter-claims, alleging that Mary Kom had been involved in extramarital relationships during their marriage. He said the couple had reconciled after an earlier period of conflict for the sake of their family, but maintained that their relationship continued to deteriorate over time.
“I was her driver, I was her cook. I did everything for the house and family. I lived like her slave, but I did it out of love,” Onler said, expressing hurt over what he described as disrespectful and damaging accusations. He added that while the couple has obtained a divorce through a customary court, the public nature of the claims has caused him personal distress.
Neither side has presented documentary evidence in public to substantiate their respective claims, and the allegations and counter-allegations remain contested. The situation underscores the complexity of private disputes when they enter the public domain, particularly involving high-profile figures.
