Hanuman Ansh has taken an unusual route to the box office. The Vishal Chaturvedi-directed film, based on the life and spiritual journey of Neem Karoli Baba, opened in cinemas on 7 August 2026. What started as a relatively quiet release has since turned into a major theatrical success, with the film's worldwide gross reported at around Rs. 347 crore by 21 September.
At the centre of the film is a new face for many viewers: Shobhinaw Satyaa. But his journey to the lead role did not begin with an audition. He joined Hanuman Ansh as an assistant director.
Who Is Shobhinaw Satyaa?
Shobhinaw Satyaa was born in Khairabad in Uttar Pradesh's Sitapur district and moved to Lucknow after his father's posting. He studied at Brightland Inter College before pursuing graduation from Faizabad University, now Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University. Alongside his degree, he trained in acting at the Opulent School of Acting & Films in Lucknow and later took a short course at the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune.
His family background is outside the film industry. In an interview with Hindustan Times, Satyaa said his father retired from the education department, his mother is a teacher and he has a younger sister.
His connection with Neem Karoli Baba also predates the film.
Satyaa has said he first heard about Baba in 2009, when he was in high school. A friend showed him Baba's story, and the friend's grandfather had served him. Satyaa said he subsequently became a follower of Neem Karoli Baba.

His Career Journey
Satyaa spent years working behind the scenes rather than appearing in front of the camera.
According to NDTV, his industry work included assistant direction, second-unit direction and script and continuity supervision. He also worked on television and streaming projects including CID, Ragini MMS Returns, Happily Ever After and Mahapaur. He also trained and later taught acting at the Opulent School of Acting and Films.
There was, however, an early sign that acting could become part of his career.
Satyaa has recalled working as an assistant director on the FTII student film Dhai Kalo, directed by Vivek Kelkar. When the lead actor could not perform, Satyaa stepped in and played the role. He has described that experience as something that happened around a decade before Hanuman Ansh.

The Hanuman Ansh Casting Story
When Satyaa joined Hanuman Ansh, he was not initially hired to play Neem Karoli Baba.
Director Vishal Chaturvedi had brought him on as an assistant director. According to Chaturvedi's account, Satyaa arrived two days after the production's pre-production work had begun. But when the director saw him, he noticed a resemblance between Satyaa and Neem Karoli Baba.
There was more than appearance.
Chaturvedi also noticed Satyaa's calm demeanour and his familiarity with the screenplay. The team had spent around 15 days rehearsing before filming, which meant Satyaa already knew the material when the possibility of casting him in the lead emerged. The director also knew about Satyaa's interest in spirituality and his devotion to Hanuman.
Satyaa was eventually given a screen test. NDTV reported that he underwent an intensive five-hour test before Chaturvedi chose him for the role.
That decision transformed his position on the production. He went from working behind the camera to playing the central character.

The success of Hanuman Ansh has changed Satyaa's public profile almost overnight.
In a September interview, he said he had maintained a low profile before the film's teaser was released and preferred keeping his personal life away from public attention. He also said that he takes inspiration from actor Amrish Puri for keeping his private life separate from his screen work.
Satyaa has also spoken about the kind of roles he wants to take up. He said he does not smoke or drink and prefers a lifestyle that he describes as satvik. He has also said that he does not want to perform abusive or violent roles that conflict with his personal values.
For now, Hanuman Ansh remains the defining screen credit of his career. His first major acting role came after years spent learning filmmaking, working behind the scenes and teaching acting.
