Atiq Ahmed was one of Uttar Pradesh's most prominent gangster-politicians.

Born in Allahabad, now Prayagraj, he served as a five-time MLA and was elected as the Member of Parliament from Phulpur in 2004. During his political career, he was associated with several parties, including the Samajwadi Party, Apna Dal and AIMIM.

Why The Ahmed Family Has Been In The Spotlight

The family's profile increased significantly after the February 2023 killing of lawyer Umesh Pal, a key witness in the 2005 Raju Pal murder case.

Police named Atiq Ahmed, members of his family and several associates in the investigation.

In April 2023, Atiq's son Asad Ahmed was killed in a police encounter in Jhansi.

Two days later, on 15 April 2023, Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were shot dead while being escorted by police for a medical examination in Prayagraj. Three men posing as journalists were arrested at the scene.

Several members of the family continue to face legal proceedings in different cases.
