Who Is Asaram?
Asaram, whose full name is Asumal Sirumalani Harpalani, was born on 17 April 1941. He founded the Asaram Ashram network and became known for his religious discourses.

Why Was Asaram Sent To Jail?
Asaram has remained in jail since his arrest in August 2013 in connection with allegations that he raped a minor girl at his ashram near Jodhpur, Rajasthan.
According to the prosecution, the survivor, who was studying at one of his ashrams, alleged that she was sexually assaulted in August 2013 after being taken to his room on the pretext of spiritual healing.
Following the complaint, Rajasthan Police arrested him on 31 August 2013.
In April 2018, a special POCSO court in Jodhpur convicted Asaram of raping the minor and sentenced him to life imprisonment under the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Three co-accused were also convicted in the case.
Was Asaram Convicted In Any Other Case?
Yes. The Jodhpur case was not the only rape case in which Asaram was convicted.
In January 2023, a sessions court in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, convicted him in a separate rape case involving a former woman follower.
According to the prosecution, the woman alleged that Asaram raped and wrongfully confined her at his Ahmedabad ashram in 2001.
The court convicted him and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Since he was already serving life imprisonment in the Rajasthan case, he remained in custody.
Cases Linked To Asaram's Family
Asaram's son, Narayan Sai, was also convicted in a separate rape case.
In April 2019, a Surat sessions court sentenced him to life imprisonment after convicting him of raping a former woman follower.
According to the prosecution, the complainant alleged that Narayan Sai repeatedly sexually assaulted her between 2002 and 2005 while she was associated with his ashram.
The case was separate from the proceedings against Asaram.
What Happened After His Conviction?
After his conviction in the Jodhpur case, Asaram remained lodged in Jodhpur Central Jail.
Over the years, he filed multiple applications seeking bail, interim bail, parole and other temporary relief, largely citing his age and medical condition.
While he received interim medical relief on some occasions, his convictions and life sentences remained unchanged. His appeals against the convictions continue through the legal process.

No.
