Posting your life online can mean sharing everything from daily routines to family celebrations and expensive purchases. But when those posts show valuables or reveal when a house is empty, they can also become part of a security investigation.
That is now the case in Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu, where YouTuber Madhumita and her family reported a burglary at their home. Gold jewellery, diamond ornaments and cash worth around Rs. 1 crore were reported missing.
Police are also examining her social media posts to find out whether they may have revealed information that could have helped the burglars.
Who Is Madhumita?
Madhumita is a YouTuber and social media content creator from Tamil Nadu. She posts lifestyle and family-related videos, including content featuring gold jewellery, cash and purchases.
Reports have described her as a creator with a sizeable social media following. NDTV said she had more than 4.5 lakh followers across social media, while other reports have cited different follower counts depending on the platform.
Her husband, Vinoth Kumar, is a businessman. The couple live in the VIP Garden area of Thammathukonam near Nagercoil with their young daughter. Reports said the family had moved to the area around 10 months before the burglary.
What Happened At The House?
On Thursday, 24 September, Madhumita, her husband and their child left home for a shopping trip to Tirunelveli.
They returned late at night and found that they could not open the front door. When they checked the rear of the house, they discovered that the back door had been broken open.
Inside, the bedroom had been ransacked and a bureau containing jewellery had been forced open. The family then contacted the Rajakkamangalam police.
Initial police reports said 118 sovereigns of gold jewellery, along with diamond ornaments and Rs. 50,000 in cash, were missing. One sovereign is commonly treated as eight grams, putting 118 sovereigns at about 944 grams.
The total value of the stolen valuables was estimated at around Rs. 1 crore.
There is some inconsistency in subsequent reports about the quantity of gold. Some later reports cited 120 sovereigns, while PTI reports carried by some outlets cited 220 sovereigns. The initial account from police cited 118 sovereigns, so that figure is used here rather than treating the conflicting later figures as settled.
Why Are Her Reels Now Part Of The Investigation?
This is where the burglary takes a social media turn.
Madhumita had posted videos showing her gold jewellery, cash and gold purchases. Some posts also featured family outings and travel plans.
Police are now examining those posts to determine whether they could have revealed information about the valuables in the house or indicated when the family would be away.
Some of her older videos reportedly showed bundles of cash and jewellery. One video also showed money being showered over her young daughter.
However, police have not established that the burglars found the house through her social media posts. Investigators are checking that possibility as one part of the wider probe.
That distinction matters. The existence of the posts does not, by itself, prove that they were used to plan the burglary.
What Action Has Police Taken?
The Rajakkamangalam police are investigating the break-in and checking CCTV footage from the area.
Senior police officials, including Kanyakumari Superintendent of Police Anshul Nagar, visited the house after the incident. Special teams have also been formed to identify and trace the suspects. Reports have variously put the number of teams at five and six.
Investigators are also examining how the burglars entered the house and whether CCTV or other evidence can help establish their movements.
Reports said the rear door was broken open. Police are also looking into the tools or equipment allegedly used to gain entry.
