Come on. Maxi dresses have existed since 1970s in India (that's how far I know). My mother and my aunts wore them in college. And they can be worn outside. The simple housewear which most people here are calling nighties are colloquially also called "gowns" (Not to be confused with the partywear ones), and they are not worn outside. Don't confuse the types. A maxi is a maxi and a gown is a gown.
