The Bilkis Bano case has gained attention after Rahul Gandhi criticised Union Minister Pralhad Joshi over his comments on the release of 11 convicts. The case relates to the 2002 Gujarat riots, when Bilkis Bano was gang-raped and seven members of her family were killed. In 2008, a CBI court convicted 11 accused and sentenced them to life imprisonment. In August 2022, the Gujarat government approved remission for the convicts, leading to their release. Joshi defended the decision, saying it followed legal provisions. In January 2024, the Supreme Court cancelled the remission order and directed the convicts to return to jail. Rahul Gandhi later referred to the issue while criticising Joshi’s appointment as a Union minister.
