US President Donald Trump has promised a $5,000 payment to every adult US citizen if Republicans retain control of both the House of Representatives and Senate in the 2026 US midterm elections.
Speaking at a Republican convention in Dallas on 9 September, Trump called it a “dividend” and compared it with payments made by companies to shareholders. He also said the money would have to be spent in the US.
Around 270 million US adults could be covered, putting the estimated cost at about $1.35 trillion (Rs. 1.1 crore).
Trump did not provide details on how the payments would be funded or implemented. The proposal would also require congressional approval.
