AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has opposed the Allahabad High Court ruling on wearing hijab in schools, after the court dismissed a Class 11 student’s plea seeking permission to wear a headscarf with her school uniform. The Allahabad High Court said the student had not provided sufficient material to establish that wearing a headscarf was an essential religious practice in Islam. The court also held that a school can enforce a uniform dress code if it is uniform, non-discriminatory and intended to maintain discipline. Owaisi criticised the ruling on 26 August, saying judges should not decide what is essential to Islam. He described the judgment as an “attack on Islam”.
