In September 2025, police opened fire on protesters in Leh, Ladakh, killing at least four civilians during demonstrations over Sixth Schedule safeguards and statehood, after years of what activists call unfulfilled 2020 promises by the BJP. Activist Sonam Wangchuk was arrested two days after the incident, and imprisoned under the National Security Act (NSA) for nearly six months. On the first anniversary of the violence, Wangchuk and others renewed demands for a judicial inquiry and demanded the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
