CCTV footage from the 24 August fire at Amravati District Women’s Hospital has brought attention to the events inside the newborn care unit, where three premature newborns died. The footage shows two nurses sleeping outside the unit before they were woken by the sound of an explosion. They then rushed towards the newborns. A Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a unit for critically ill newborns who require constant nursing and intensive monitoring, according to National Health Mission guidelines. The fire broke out after what was reported as a ventilator explosion. A total of 36 newborns were rescued, while three died in the incident. According to The Indian Express, CCTV footage showed the fire alarm ringing three times before medical staff intervened. The footage also showed warning lights flashing inside the ward. An 11-member committee formed to examine the incident found several lapses, including delayed repairs to ventilators and faulty fire sprinklers. Five officials were suspended following the inquiry, and action was initiated over alleged lapses in fire-safety equipment. The CCTV footage has led to allegations of medical negligence, particularly over the two nurses being asleep outside the newborn care unit. The footage, however, shows the sequence of events captured on camera and does not by itself establish negligence. The incident has also brought attention to working conditions for medical staff. A 2026 survey by the Federation of All India Medical Association reported burnout, sleep deprivation and inadequate post-duty rest among medical staff.
