A young girl from Arunachal Pradesh has sparked an emotional conversation online after a video of her responding to someone who called her Chinese went viral.
In the clip, the girl calmly but firmly explains why being mistaken for Chinese makes her angry and upset, while emphasising that she and her family are Indian.
“Hum bhi India hai. Hum log Indian hain. Aap humko Chinese bolne se hum bohot gussa hotey hain, bohot dukhi hote hain. Humko Indian bolo. Hum India ka hai. Hum Itanagar mein rehte hai,” she says.
In English, she says that they are also from India and that being called Chinese makes them angry and sad. She asks to be called Indian and says that they live in Itanagar.
The girl's response has resonated with many viewers, with several social media users praising her for speaking about her identity so confidently.
The video has also prompted discussion around the experiences of people from India's Northeast, who have long spoken about being mistaken for people from other East and Southeast Asian countries because of their physical features.
For the girl, however, the message was simple: her appearance does not change her nationality or her identity as an Indian.
The video was widely shared on Instagram and X, where users responded to her words with messages of support.
One user wrote, “Yes your Indian more than everyone else.”
Another said, “Beta, aap akele pura India ke barabar hai, aap se jyada koi aur Indian ho hee nahi sakta,” telling the girl that she is as Indian as anyone else.
“Sorry, that you have to face this…I wish, people understand this soon,” another person commented.
Another user pointed to the broader issue, writing that the Northeast is an integral part of India and its people are Indian citizens.
The video has consequently become more than just a viral moment. It has brought renewed attention to the importance of understanding India's cultural and ethnic diversity and avoiding assumptions about someone's identity based on their appearance.
For the young girl in the video, the message was clear: “Hum Indian hain.”
