Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, a Catholic priest in Guayaquil, Ecuador, was leading a church service on 17 October. During his sermon, he spoke about the fleeting nature of life and urged worshippers to spend less time scrolling on their phones and more time with God and their loved ones. Moments later, while he was standing behind the altar, a large wooden crucifix mounted on the wall behind him suddenly fell and struck the back of his head. The incident was captured on the church’s livestream. People inside the church screamed and rushed to help him as they called for an ambulance. Church officials in Guayaquil later confirmed that the priest had lost his life and shared their condolences with his family and the local Catholic community. The reason why the crucifix fell remained unclear as of publishing.
