A dispute between two transgender groups over areas for collecting "badhai" escalated into a nude protest outside the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) office in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh. Police intervened after the protest disrupted traffic for about an hour and arrested five people. According to reports, protesters climbed onto vehicles, blocked motorists, removed their clothes and raised slogans near the SSP’s office. The dispute concerned the areas in which the two groups collected "badhai", a traditional practice in which transgender people bless families during childbirth, weddings and other auspicious occasions in return for money or gifts. One group accused the rival group of issuing threats and alleged that police had not acted on its complaints. The group staged the protest near the SSP’s office over the dispute. Police intervened to clear the road after the disruption, which lasted around an hour. Five people were arrested in connection with the incident. A National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) study found that nearly 25% of transgender people earned a living through "badhai". The same study reported that 96% of transgender people faced employment discrimination. Payments for "badhai" are voluntary, and people cannot be forced to pay during celebrations.
