In Manipur’s Senapati district, more than a dozen men came together to wash a large carpet after the annual Zhaimai Beivoli Festival. The month-long festival is associated with the blooming of the Giant Himalayan Lily. According to Neha Gurung, the carpets are used for volleyball matches and penalty shootouts during the festival. After the festival ends, the carpets are washed and stored for use the following year. The men lifted, shook and slammed the fabric into the water to clean it. The carpet-washing is an annual practice linked to the festival. There have been no reported pollution concerns over this activity. Separately, the Central Pollution Control Board identified 13 polluted river stretches in Manipur based on water-quality monitoring conducted at 39 locations on 14 rivers in 2019 and 2021.
