At least 18 people died after thousands of migrants attempted to enter Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta from Morocco. Authorities said most of the victims drowned while trying to cross by sea. Others died in a stampede during the border rush. Following the crossings, Spain deployed its military to secure the border. Spain's Interior Ministry said nearly 49,000 migrants crossed into Ceuta by land and sea within 24 hours. Ceuta is a Spanish autonomous city located on Morocco's northern coast. Along with Melilla, it forms the European Union's only two land borders with Africa. The enclave has seen repeated migration surges over the years as migrants attempt to reach European territory through Spain's border with Morocco.
